Though school is already back in session, for nine years Roswell’s traditional End of Summer event has always been held around Labor Day.

“Based on the success of the Fourth of July celebration the city was looking for another community opportunity for its citizens,” said Roswell Recreation Superintendent Katie Troline, who coordinates both events.

“We had an ongoing relationship with Centennial High School and approached them about starting a Labor Day weekend event. The intent was to celebrate the end of summer as well as the start of school year as a community.”

There are similarities between the Independence Day and End of Summer events, Ms. Troline said. “Both are family oriented, both have live music, and both have carnival activities. And both end with fireworks.”

This year’s event is Sept. 5 at Centennial High School baseball field. There will be inflatables, cotton candy, ice cream, face painting and balloons.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs and more will be sold by Miller’s Ale House and Restaurant.

Centennial Fine Arts Booster Club students and parents volunteer to run the carnival activities, and a portion of the ticket proceeds benefit the club.

The event begins at 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., the 3-Way Street Band is scheduled to perform, followed by Big Biscuit Band at 7:30 p.m. At dark, a fireworks display caps off the evening.

Though not as packed as the annual Fourth of July event, End of Summer Celebration is still very well-attended.

“We used to hold this on Labor Day itself, but we moved it to the Sunday before, and now lots more people come,” Ms. Troline said. “It’s picked up steam, and it’s growing. We usually get between 5,000 and 10,000 people.”
